For about a year now, I’ve been in a long distance relationship with my girlfriend, and though it’s very difficult to be separated from the one I love, it has given me a new perspective on our “long distance relationship” with God.

Infinitely more than I yearn to be reunited with my girlfriend, Christ yearns to be reunited with us, His Church. And just as surely as my girlfriend is constantly thinking of me and tenderly longing for my coming to her, we ought to be constantly thinking of Christ and longing for His soon coming.

Another benefit of my long distance relationship has been getting to know my girlfriend more deeply through daily conversation. Praise God for technological advances such as, Skype and Facebook Messenger, that allow us to stay in constant communication with our loved ones far away. But there’s a more advanced technological invention and one more ancient, called prayer. Prayer combined with Bible study, is a conversation with God, us talking with Him and He talking with us. We have a tendency to make prayer burdensome for ourselves and our brethren, believing we must go through a round of ritual and formalism to approach God. And though we ought to always show God due reverence, let us never lose our simplicity.

“Prayer is the opening of the heart to God as to a friend.” {Steps to Christ 93.2}

The worst thing we can do is to stop talking to God. My long distance relationship and any relationship for that matter, wouldn’t survive long without constant communication. And we surely lose our hold upon God when we neglect daily prayer and Bible study with Him.

“The darkness of the evil one encloses those who neglect to pray.” {Steps to Christ 94.2}

So as we watch and wait for the anticipated return of our Savior and Lord, let us maintain communication with Him and never forget how much He misses us and longs to be with us.

“Father, I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am …” (John 17:24)
